Flora Play Dough

Updated: Jul 12, 2020

I've always found myself in a pinch with no play dough when needed for a lesson . Has this ever happened to you? Most home made playdoh recipes consist of cream of tartar, which in my opinion is way too expensive! Plus it's not the most common ingredient found in ones pantry. After some browsing and experimenting, I decided to try out this recipe I found off Pinterest (original recipe is here). I ended up tweaking this recipe a tad just to tie into our flora theme (plus its aesthetically pleasing and smells lovely).

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of flour

  • 1/4 cup of salt

  • 3/4 cup of water

  • 3 tablespoons of lemon juice

  • 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil

  • Lavender essential oil

  • Wax paper

  • Flower petals, leaves, etc.(optional)

  • Food colouring (optional)

Directions:

1) Add wet ingredients (water, oil, lemon juice and lavender oil) to a non stick pot and heat to medium low heat. Liquid should just be hot and not boiling.

2) Combine salt and flour into a separate bowl and whisk so ingredients are blended well.

3) Once water is hot, add the dry ingredients to the pot. Mix with a spatula or wooden spoon. Keep mixing until combined well but make sure not to over cook the mixture.

4) Once everything is mixed well, remove play-doh onto wax paper. If mixture is still too sticky add a few sprinkles of flour and keep kneading until well combined.

5) Finally, add your flower petals, leaves or other organic materials and continue to knead into the play-doh.

Essentially, if you want to make play dough without the flowers you can! Just omit the step 5.

Remember to keep your play-doh in a sealed air tight container or bag when storing away. Enjoy friends!
